I was meeting up some former co-workers for lunch, and allowing me to select the restaurant, I chose Uzbek food.
Based on good yelp reviews I picked Tandoori Food & Bakery.
I ordered for my group of three a variety of items so we could get a broader scope of Uzbek food.
Firstly, we enjoyed the large Uzbek Leposhka bread which was wonderful; super crusty on the outside, warmly soft inside, and also having a nice chew. It was a bargain at $2.00 as it comfortably fed all three of us. Though I wish they served some sort of spread alongside the bread; the addition of something like butter would have made a superb addition.
I added a Samsa which was so scrumptious.....what is not to like about a flaky crispy exterior dough cradling a chunky meat filling of lamb meat and mouth-watering fat!
The various meats available were vast, but I selected there skewers; one Boneless Chicken, one Lamb Rib, and one Lolah Kebab.
The Boneless Chicken pieces were very moist and had a delicious sweet and fresh chicken taste; much of that attributable to it being very simply seasoned.
Me and one my friends (the other friend is not a fan of lamb) loved the Lamb Rib which was super tender with juicy rendered lamb fat and (like the chicken) very sweet in flavor from the same simple seasoning.
The third skewer was the Lolah Kebab and it was just as good as the other two skewers, as the ground chicken was flavorful with much more seasoning compared to the other meats (there was a distinct oregano flavor).
To contrast the rich and heavy dishes, I also added a Carrot Salad which was seasoned so uniquely, and I still cannot pinpoint the spices used.
Finally, I knew I had to get was the highly acclaimed Pilav, and thankfully it was available. This glistening rice was adorned with chickpeas, carrot slivers, and several pieces of bone-in lamb. Upon my first bite, I loved the rice as it was so imbued with rich flavor from the fatty lamb. I could eat spoonfuls of the Pilav and see why it is such a popular dish! -

If you can get past the language barrier and don't mind pointing at what you want try the best restaurant in Rego Park - tandoori! Good food is really hard to come by in the area and they do it very well! I love the bbq style meats they serve, they also have a selection of fish which is also very tasty. Be sure to order bread it's baked in house and is always nice and soft.

It was empty when I arrived. There were only two tables occupied. I ordered the manti, a Russian pear soda (which was too sweet), and I reluctantly got a burnt samsa because they had sold out the rest. He could have threw in a discount, but didn't offer anything when I decided to get it just to try it. On the menu, it is listed as lemonade, but they just throw in Russian pear soda. When I asked the waiter to correct it he said they only had Russian soda and some Brazilian soda. Minus one waiter, the customer service was borderline non-existent. When I asked one of the male hosts a question he barely looked up.
There was one amicable waiter, but he struggled with his English in communicating about some of the beverages. My night got worse as I should have known better to have looked up the place before going, but was told at the end of the night that it was cash only. I told the guy to just charge more on my card. I was informed they literally had no credit card machine.
The owner? proceeded to flip over my credit card and examine it.. I didn't exactly have any cash on me and the card that I had didn't dispense cash. For a while, it was dead silence and I told them I'd bring them cash the next day. Fortunately, the waiter decided to attempt Venmo and partake in accepting funds through that method. For a minute there, I offered my wine bottle from the groceries as collateral.. haha. Seriously bring cash here and save yourself the trouble, but really it's too much in this day and age. -

Growing up in a predominantly Jewish area, I had a lot of Jewish friends and of course - jewish / Russian food! A good friend of mine comes to this restaurant regularly with his family, so it can't be bad! & trust me, it's not...it may look like a hole in the wall and people are not so friendly because you don't speak the language but once you get past that, get ready for some fresh, delicious food. Let's get to the breakdown:
The place - like I said, hole in the wall, unassuming restaurant. Parking around the area is tough, so plan ahead. Casual, nothing fancy. Can accommodate big groups, so call ahead to rsvp.
Food - everything I've had here was great! I'll lost my favorites:
Chai - tea. Option of black or green. Ask for sugar cubes.
Fresh salad - literally just that. Mix of tomatoes, cucumbers, onions and other daily fresh veggies they have. Let them know what size you want. Small or large.
Samsa - a small "empanada". It's made fresh daily and it comes stuffed with lamb meat & onions. Comes with a tomato sauce salsa for it. Get it.
Lagman noodle soup - their version of a hand pulled noodle soup with lamb meat and vegetables. You can order a small cup or large bowl. Fresh every time and I usually get the small just so I can get my fix with everything else.
Garlic French fries - self explanatory. Great side to share and real potatoes !
Shish kabobs - I get the lamb, chicken (boneless), & the sea bass. Gotta get them all. They all come super tender and juicy. Trust me.
Rice pilaf - not always available so ask if they have it. It's how I would describe it as a soft fried rice with tender pieces of carrots with lamb meat. It's a meal in itself, so share it or devour it on your own.
The menu is extensive but the above is my go to. I've brought friends here and they all feel in love and thank me for taking them. Just remember they close for religious reasons, for example Friday's for sabbath. Call ahead or check Yelp to see if they are open. Let me know what you guys think!
